Sierra began as a trim name on GMC's C/K pickups, then became the standalone nameplate for GMC's full-size truck with the GMT400-platform first generation introduced for the 1988 model year. When GM dropped the C/K name for 1999, every GMC full-size pickup became a Sierra outright, while its Chevrolet twin took the single Silverado name.
The Sierra has shadowed the Chevrolet Silverado through every generation since — the GMT800 (1999–2007), GMT900 (2007–2013), K2XX (2014–2018), and the T1 platform (2019–present) — sharing mechanicals but pitched a notch more upscale with squarer styling and richer interiors.
From the 1999 model year the range-topping Sierra carried the Denali badge, which grew into GMC's signature luxury sub-brand; later trims added the off-road AT4 and the premium Denali Ultimate. The Sierra remains, alongside the Silverado, one of GM's best-selling and most profitable vehicle lines.
