GMC Envoy History

The Envoy started for the 1998 model year as the highest-trim version of the GMC Jimmy. It became a standalone model with the second generation, introduced in early 2001 as a 2002 model on GM's GMT360 platform — the upmarket sibling of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and Oldsmobile Bravada.

The second-generation Envoy spawned the stretched Envoy XL and the unusual Envoy XUV with a retractable rear roof. GMC ended the model after the 2009 model year, following the closure of the Moraine, Ohio assembly plant, as the mid-size body-on-frame SUV segment faded in favor of crossovers.
