FPV F6 History
History
Introduced in October 2004 on the BA Mk II Falcon platform, the FPV F6 (badged 'Typhoon' in sedan form) was powered by Ford's 4.0-litre turbocharged inline-six 'Barra 270T' producing 270 kW (362 hp) and a muscular 550 Nm of torque from as low as 2,000 rpm. Launch specification was manual-only — a six-speed Tremec T-56 — with a bonnet scoop and 18-inch alloy wheels. The companion coupe-utility variant was called the Tornado.
The BF generation (from 2005) added a six-speed ZF automatic and Brembo brakes, and introduced the limited-run R-Spec Typhoon in 2007: 300 cars with stiffened sport suspension and 19-inch wheels. The Typhoon and Tornado names were retired when the FG Falcon arrived in 2008; the model became simply the 'F6', now producing 310 kW (416 hp) from the revised Barra 310T. An F6-E executive variant with wood grain, reversing camera and leather was added for 2009.
A FG Mk II update followed in 2011 with a new front fascia and eight-inch touchscreen. The F6 continued until 2014, completing a decade-long run as Australia's benchmark turbocharged performance sedan — a car that many enthusiasts rated above the V8 GT for outright pace on winding roads, thanks to its abundant torque and lighter nose.
