History

The 1971 Pinto was Ford's domestic answer to imported subcompacts and sold in large numbers through the decade.

Its rear-mounted fuel tank became the subject of a notorious safety controversy. The Pinto platform also underpinned the Mustang II. Production ended in 1980, succeeded by the Escort.
