Citroën C5 History
History
The C5 replaced the XM in early 2001 as Citroën's executive model and adopted a conventional saloon/liftback form rather than the XM's dramatic styling. It retained a version of the hydropneumatic suspension (offered as an option alongside conventional coil springs — a first for a Citroën executive car) and was available as a five-door saloon and five-door estate (Tourer). The first generation sold approximately 720,000 units to December 2007.
The second generation debuted in 2008 in a more mainstream three-box saloon form (abandoning the liftback), with the Tourer estate continuing. Diesel versions dominated European sales. European production of the second-generation C5 ended in 2017; the nameplate then went dormant in Europe until the completely redesigned C5 X arrived.
