History

Introduced at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show and entering retail sales in China in June 2015, the first-generation Tang was available as a plug-in hybrid with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and two electric motors producing up to 551 hp (411 kW) combined. It became the top-selling plug-in electric car in China and the world's top-selling plug-in hybrid in 2016.

A fully redesigned second generation debuted at Auto China in April 2018, expanding the lineup to include a pure battery-electric Tang EV in addition to plug-in hybrid (DM) variants, and previewing a new BYD family design language. The Tang was also BYD's first model exported to Europe, arriving in Norway in 2021. A Tang L evolution was unveiled in early 2025 for the premium segment.
