History

Introduced in 2009 and entering fleet service in May 2010 with 40 taxis in Shenzhen, the BYD e6 was the company's first production battery electric vehicle. It claimed a range of around 400 km (250 mi) and was sold primarily to commercial fleet operators — taxi companies and ride-hailing services — in China and across a dozen other countries.

Sales to the general public in China began in October 2011, running well behind the originally planned 2009 date. By 2016 it was the top-selling all-electric passenger car in China, with 20,605 deliveries that year. Multiple updated generations have followed, and the e6 continued to be offered in fleet-market roles.
