History

The BYD Song debuted in 2015 as BYD's Dynasty-series compact crossover SUV, named after the Song dynasty. It evolved rapidly across multiple sub-nameplates: the Song Pro (introduced 2019 at Auto Shanghai) repositioned the core model upmarket, while the Song Plus (September 2020) offered a larger, more premium alternative between the Song Pro and Tang.

The Song Plus became a volume leader after the DM-i plug-in hybrid and pure-electric (EV) variants were added in 2021, with the petrol-only model phased out in 2022. In export markets the Song Plus EV became the BYD Sealion 6 (from 2024), illustrating BYD's strategy of badging the same platform under different series names for different regions. By late 2025 the Song Plus was nearing discontinuation in China after reaching approximately 1.6 million cumulative sales.
