Launched alongside the Golf and also styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the front-wheel-drive Scirocco was Volkswagen's sporty water-cooled coupe, going on sale in the US for 1975 as the spiritual successor to the Karmann Ghia.
Two US generations were sold through 1988; a much later third-generation Scirocco (2008–2017) was never offered in the United States. Source note: Wikipedia "Volkswagen Scirocco" — US sales ended after MY1988, replaced by the Corrado.
