Unic U4 History
History
New for 1934, the U4 was Unic's attempt to compete in the mid-range French market against the Berliet 944 and small Delage models. Its 2-litre side-valve four-cylinder used magneto ignition, articulated-arm independent front suspension, and a double-reduction back axle — technically well-equipped for the period.
By 1937 the U4D updated the engine to 2150 cc with overhead valves and 55 hp. Alongside it came the U6C, a 3000 cc six-cylinder with 85 hp and the option of an electromagnetic Cotal preselector gearbox. Despite genuine quality, few buyers in the Depression-era luxury segment were willing to pay Unic's prices, and private-car production ceased in July 1938.
