Tesla Model X History
History
The Model X was Tesla's first SUV, sharing much of its platform and powertrain with the Model S but adding a taller body with up to three rows and seven seats. Its signature feature is its double-hinged rear 'falcon wing' doors, which open upward and tuck close to the body to allow access in tight parking spaces. A prototype was shown in 2012, but the complexity of those doors and the panoramic windshield delayed first deliveries until September 2015.
Like the Model S, it was offered in a climbing range of dual-motor trims (90D, P90D, 100D, P100D) and gained the 2021 'Palladium' interior refresh and a tri-motor Plaid version. The Model X was acclaimed for its space, range, and straight-line speed but criticized early on for the cost and reliability of its elaborate doors.
Tesla confirmed the end of Model X production in 2026, closing it out alongside the Model S with a final limited 'Signature' run.
