Tatra Tatra 700 History

The Tatra 700, introduced in 1996, was a modernised successor to the 613 — sharing its rear-engined, air-cooled V8 architecture but with a new body featuring updated panels and detail styling. It was offered with either a 3.5-litre or 4.4-litre 90-degree air-cooled V8. Despite the significant update, post-communist Czechoslovakia's transition to a market economy meant the traditional government customer base had evaporated, and without state procurement contracts, commercial sales proved meagre.

Production ran from April 1996 to July 1999, with approximately 75 cars built in total — a figure that underscores the marginal economics of the enterprise. When Tatra halted T700 production in 1999, it closed the chapter on over a century of passenger-car manufacturing, redirecting the company's full capacity toward the heavy trucks and special all-terrain vehicles that remain its business today.
