Tatra Tatra 11 History

Designed by Hans Ledwinka, the Tatra 11 debuted in 1923 with a revolutionary central backbone-tube chassis — a rigid steel spine replacing the conventional ladder frame — combined with independent swing-axle rear suspension and a front-mounted, air-cooled 1056 cc two-cylinder engine. With 3,847 units built, it proved the concept in the market.

The layout was so effective that it directly spawned the Tatra 12 (1926–1936, 7,222 built), which refined the same architecture. Ledwinka's backbone chassis and air-cooled engineering also caught the attention of Ferdinand Porsche, whose early Volkswagen prototypes drew directly on Tatra's principles — a debt that later led to legal proceedings settled after World War II.
