Tatra Tatra 603 History

Tatra resumed passenger-car production after the communist nationalization of the company with the T603, launched in 1956. Built largely by hand at a rate that never exceeded a few hundred cars per year, the 603 was a monocoque rear-engined sedan powered by a 2.5-litre air-cooled V8 producing around 100 hp. In socialist Czechoslovakia, T603s were allocated exclusively to high-ranking party officials, ministry heads, and directors of state enterprises — ownership was a marker of regime status rather than personal wealth.

Over its 19-year run, the 603 evolved through three main variants: the original 603-1 (identifiable by three headlamps under a single glass cover), the 1962 two-603 (four separate headlamps, revised engine), and the final version with disc brakes. About one-third of the 20,422 cars built were exported to other Eastern Bloc states, Cuba, and China. Despite limited resources, factory-entered T603s competed in 79 motorsport events between 1957 and 1967.
