SsangYong Chairman History
History
Unveiled in 1997 as SsangYong's first and only sedan, the Chairman was a full-size executive car for the South Korean domestic market, built on the Mercedes-Benz W124 E-Class platform but styled closer to the larger W140 S-Class — styling so Mercedes-like that Daimler reportedly requested changes before export approval.
A second model, the Chairman W, was introduced in 2008 alongside the facelifted Chairman H, offering a more modern body and updated powertrains. Production of all Chairman variants ended on 23 November 2017, when SsangYong announced discontinuation to shift focus entirely to SUVs and crossovers.
