Smart #1 History
History
The Smart #1 (pronounced 'number one') was unveiled in April 2022 as the first vehicle from the Mercedes-Benz/Geely joint venture Smart Automobile Co. Designed in Germany by a Mercedes-led team and built in Xi'an, China, it uses Geely's SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) electric platform and offers rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configurations.
The #1 represents Smart's complete departure from the Fortwo formula — it is a full five-door crossover aimed at European urban buyers seeking a premium compact EV. A high-performance Brabus edition was also offered, continuing the historic Smart-Brabus relationship into the electric era.
