History
Presented to the public on 10 June 1949 in Trollhättan and entering full production on 12 December 1949, the Saab 92 was the marque's debut automobile. Its development project had begun in 1945, led by engineer Gunnar Ljungström, drawing directly on Saab's aircraft expertise: the body was shaped in a wind tunnel and achieved a drag coefficient of 0.30 — remarkably slippery for a production car of its era.
The 92 was powered by a 764 cc water-cooled two-cylinder two-stroke engine producing 25 hp, driving the front wheels through a three-speed gearbox — a layout the company would retain for decades. The entire body was stamped from a single sheet of steel, then cut for doors and windows, giving exceptional torsional rigidity. A total of 20,128 were built before the revised 93 replaced it in 1956.
