Pontiac Grand Prix History
History
The Grand Prix launched for 1962 as a full-size personal-luxury coupe, then moved to an intermediate platform for 1969, helping define the affordable personal-luxury class against pricier rivals like the Eldorado.
It became front-wheel drive on GM's W-body for 1988, adding a sedan for 1990. Later cars leaned into performance, with the supercharged 3.8-liter GTP and, finally, the 5.3-liter V8 Grand Prix GXP. The nameplate was retired after 2008, a casualty of Pontiac's wind-down.
