History

The LeMans began for 1962 as the top Tempest trim and became Pontiac's intermediate in its own right. As the higher-spec A-body, it was the car the GTO option was first ordered on in 1964, placing it at the center of the muscle-car story.

The classic LeMans ran through 1981. Pontiac later revived the name (1988–1993) on a very different car — a Daewoo-built, Korean-sourced subcompact — a budget econobox that shared only the badge with the muscle-era original.
