Added to the NSU range in 1967, the TT (and the more extreme TTS) were performance-oriented versions of the Prinz 1000 platform with tuned air-cooled OHC four-cylinder engines. The TT produced 65 PS DIN from 1177 cc; the TTS extracted 70 PS from the one-litre unit and was built in only 2,402 examples, explicitly conceived for competition.
Despite its modest size and power, the TTS proved devastatingly effective in its class, winning a total of 29 national championships across Europe and North America during its five-year production life. In the TT's debut year of 1967, Günther Irmscher won the Tour d'Europe outright in one. The TT remained the most successful German car in national hillclimbs well into the mid-1970s, competing after production ended. The TTS ran until July 1971; the TT continued until 1972.
