History
The Montero Sport arrived for 1997 as a smaller, less expensive companion to the full-size Montero, based on the Mitsubishi Challenger platform with a body-on-frame construction and V6 power.
It sold well during the late-1990s SUV boom but was discontinued after the 2004 model year as Mitsubishi replaced it with the more car-like crossovers: the Outlander (which had arrived for 2003) and the new Endeavor (2004). The Montero Sport was built in Japan, unlike the US-designed Endeavor.
