History
The 3000GT replaced the aging Starion in the US for the 1991 model year, sold concurrently with the mechanically identical Dodge Stealth. The range topped out with the VR-4: a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 producing 300 hp (rising to 320 for 1994), paired with permanent all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, electronically adjustable suspension, and active aerodynamics — a genuinely exotic specification at its price.
A Spyder convertible with an electrohydraulic folding hardtop joined the lineup for 1995. Sales slowed as the 1990s wore on, and Mitsubishi discontinued the 3000GT in North America after the 1999 model year; the final Japanese-market GTO continued through 2000.
