History

The Diamante arrived in the US for the 1992 model year as Mitsubishi's near-luxury flagship, replacing the Sigma. Priced around $28,000 and backed by the Japan Car of the Year award for 1990, it offered a transverse V6, standard front-wheel drive, and a high-feature cabin competitive with entry-level European alternatives.

A second generation followed for 1997. Mitsubishi ceased North American exports after the 2004 model year, citing declining sales and unfavorable exchange rates; upper-end Galant GTS trims effectively absorbed its place in the lineup.
