Maybach W3 History

Karl Maybach unveiled the W3 at the Berlin Motor Show in September 1921, making it the marque's first series-production car. The five-metre-long car was powered by a 5.7-litre inline-six producing 70 hp and was capable of 110 km/h.

The W3 was notable as the first German automobile to be equipped with four-wheel brakes — a mechanical braking system with power compensation developed in-house at Maybach. Its two-speed gearbox was operated by a foot pedal rather than a conventional gear lever, prioritising ease of use for wealthy 'gentleman drivers'.

Approximately 300 W3s were built between 1921 and 1928. The model established Maybach as a builder of technically advanced, ultra-luxury automobiles aimed at a clientele who demanded both innovation and refinement.
