Maybach Mercedes-Maybach S-Class History
History
After the standalone Maybach brand's failure, Daimler announced in November 2014 that the Maybach name would return as a sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz, applied to ultra-luxury versions of its existing model lines. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2014 and went on sale in spring 2015.
The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class rides on a wheelbase extended by 200 mm over the standard long-wheelbase S-Class, freeing the rear cabin for first-class seating — including the optional rear-seat 'Chauffeur Package' with reclining executive seats, a fixed centre console with a refrigerator, and a glass partition. The S680 flagship variant is powered by a 6.0-litre biturbo V12.
The sub-brand strategy proved far more commercially successful than the standalone revival: over 60,000 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class examples had been delivered worldwide by the mid-2020s, establishing the nameplate as a viable ultra-luxury pillar within the Mercedes portfolio.
