Local Motors LM3D Swim History

Debuted at the 2015 SEMA show, the LM3D Swim was Local Motors' follow-on to the Strati proof-of-concept — a more refined, production-intent 3D-printed electric vehicle designed by community member Kevin Lo. The body structure was composed of approximately 75 to 80 percent 3D-printed parts (ABS plastic and carbon fiber), printed using the same large-format BAAM process pioneered on the Strati.

Priced at $53,000, the LM3D Swim was positioned as the world's first road-legal production 3D-printed car. Local Motors announced pre-sales for spring 2016 and targeted customer deliveries for early 2017, pending completion of crash testing. The LM3D incorporated IBM IoT connectivity, presaging the technology partnerships that would define the Olli program. However, crash testing and highway certification were never completed, and as the company pivoted resources toward the Olli autonomous shuttle the LM3D Swim never entered production or reached customer deliveries.
