Lada Niva (Lada 4×4) History

The Lada Niva (VAZ-2121) entered production on 5 April 1977 as the first vehicle developed entirely by AvtoVAZ without a Fiat template. Its engineering was genuinely innovative for a budget vehicle: a unibody structure (rare in off-roaders of the era), permanent all-wheel drive with a locking centre differential, independent front suspension, and front disc brakes — features then found only on expensive European 4x4s. It was designed to be both a capable off-roader and a usable everyday car, bridging the gap between agricultural utility vehicles and passenger cars.

The Niva was introduced at the 1978 Paris Motor Show and quickly took an estimated 40% share of the European market for four-wheel drive vehicles, where it undercut rivals dramatically on price. It was exported widely to Western Europe, Canada, and Latin America and earned respect from overlanders and motorsport competitors alike, finishing the Paris–Dakar Rally on several occasions.

After the original Land Rover Defender was discontinued in 2016, the Niva became the longest-production off-road light vehicle still manufactured in its original form. AvtoVAZ refreshed and renamed the classic three-door as the 'Lada 4×4 Legend' while introducing the more modern 'Lada Niva Travel' (formerly the Chevrolet Niva, a wider 2002 joint-venture model now rebranded) alongside it. By end of 2020, an estimated 650,000 original Nivas had been sold globally.
