History
The Sportage arrived in the US for the 1995 model year as a compact, body-on-frame SUV — an early entry in what would become one of the most contested segments in the industry. US sales ran through the 2002 model year for the first generation before a two-year gap.
The second generation returned for 2005 on a unibody platform shared with the Hyundai Tucson, marking a decisive move to car-based crossover architecture. Successive redesigns arrived for 2011 (third gen), 2017 (fourth gen), and 2023 (fifth gen), with each iteration growing in technology and refinement.
The 2023 fifth-generation Sportage added a hybrid and plug-in hybrid option and a more angular design, cementing its status as one of Kia's highest-volume global nameplates.
