Jaguar X-Type History

The X-Type launched in 2001 as Jaguar's entry-level compact executive car, built on a heavily reworked Ford Mondeo platform and initially offered only with all-wheel drive and V6 power. An estate (wagon) joined in 2004, and front-wheel-drive and diesel versions broadened its appeal.

Intended to grow volume, the X-Type was commercially divisive — critics felt its Ford underpinnings diluted the brand, and it cannibalised S-Type sales. Production of both body styles ended in July 2009.
