The 1993 model year

Overview

The Fox-body's send-off — and the debut of Ford's new SVT performance brand. The standard 5.0 was quietly re-rated to 205 hp (now with hypereutectic pistons), but the headline was the first SVT Cobra: a 235-hp 5.0 with GT-40 heads and intake, four-wheel discs, and a tuned chassis. A stripped, 107-unit Cobra R built for racing closed out the era. The last Fox-body Mustang was built August 26, 1993. (Horsepower figures are SAE net.)

Year over year

What changed

  • The standard 5.0 HO was re-rated to 205 hp and switched to hypereutectic pistons.
  • The first SVT Cobra arrived: 235-hp 5.0 with GT-40 heads/intake, larger throttle body and injectors, four-wheel disc brakes, and revised suspension/wheels.
  • The SVT Cobra R — a stripped, race-ready homologation special (no A/C, radio, rear seat, or sound deadening), Vibrant Red only, 107 built.
  • Final model year of the Fox-body Mustang; production ended August 26, 1993.

Worth knowing

Notable

  • First SVT Cobra — the in-house performance flagship that launched the Cobra line.
  • The 1993 Cobra R (107 built) is a blue-chip Fox-body collectible.
  • Limited Edition LX 5.0 "Feature" convertibles (3,003 built) — two send-off colors: 1,500 Vibrant White cars with a white power top, white leather interior, and white-painted 16-inch 5-spoke "Pony" wheels (the so-called "triple white"), and 1,503 Canary Yellow (bright yellow) cars with a black or white top and matching leather interior and chrome-plated 5-spoke "Pony" wheels. Both wore a rear decklid spoiler and Pony-embroidered headrests and floor mats. These are distinct from the 1990 Emerald Green "7-Up" convertible and from the 1993 SVT Cobra — a common mix-up.
  • "Last of the Fox-body" send-off appeal across the lineup.

Living with it

Reliability & ownership notes

  • The 205-hp '93 LX/GT 5.0 is the same well-supported engine; the re-rating is largely on paper.
  • The SVT Cobra (4,993 built) and especially the Cobra R (107 built) are high-value — verify VIN, documentation, and SVT-specific hardware (heads, intake, brakes).
  • Inspect for Fox-body rust on all body styles.
