The 1986 model year
Overview
The 5.0 went fully fuel-injected. Ford fitted sequential multiport electronic fuel injection (SEFI, speed-density) to the 302 — rated at 200 hp, a slight on-paper dip from the 210-hp carbureted 1985 but a major driveability and reliability gain. A stronger 8.8-inch rear axle arrived behind the V8. It was the final year for the SVO. (Horsepower figures are SAE net.)

Year over year
What changed
- The 5.0 HO switched to sequential multiport EFI (SEFI, speed-density) — the first multiport-injected 302 — rated 200 hp.
- A stronger 8.8-inch rear axle replaced the 7.5-inch behind the V8.
- The carbureted 5.0 was retired; the carburetor era ended.
- Final model year for the SVO (rated 200 hp).
Worth knowing
Notable
- First fuel-injected (multiport) 5.0 — the start of the modern EFI 5.0.
- Last year of the SVO (9,844 built across 1984–86).
Living with it
Reliability & ownership notes
- The 1986 SEFI 5.0 used low-flow cylinder heads (small valves), so it dynos softer than the 1987-up 5.0 despite the same on-paper drop — a quirk collectors and tuners know well.
- Multiport injection greatly improved cold-start, idle, and reliability versus the carbureted cars.
- Inspect for Fox-body rust.
