The 1984 model year
Overview
The year of the SVO. Ford's Special Vehicle Operations launched a 175-hp intercooled turbo 2.3 — a European-flavored, handling-focused Mustang with four-wheel discs, unique aero, and a price near a 911's neighborhood. The 5.0 split into a 175-hp carbureted version (manual) and a new 165-hp CFI fuel-injected version (automatic). Ford also marked the Mustang's 20th anniversary with the GT350 edition. (Horsepower figures are SAE net.)

Living with it
Reliability & ownership notes
- The SVO is mechanically sophisticated for its day — turbo, intercooler, and electronics demand a knowledgeable specialist; parts can be hard to source.
- 1984 CFI 5.0s introduced electronic engine management to the V8 line; the carbureted 5.0 remained the higher-output manual-only option.
- Standard Fox-body rust inspection applies.
