The 1984 model year

Overview

The year of the SVO. Ford's Special Vehicle Operations launched a 175-hp intercooled turbo 2.3 — a European-flavored, handling-focused Mustang with four-wheel discs, unique aero, and a price near a 911's neighborhood. The 5.0 split into a 175-hp carbureted version (manual) and a new 165-hp CFI fuel-injected version (automatic). Ford also marked the Mustang's 20th anniversary with the GT350 edition. (Horsepower figures are SAE net.)

Year over year

What changed

  • The SVO debuted: intercooled, fuel-injected 175-hp turbo 2.3 with four-wheel disc brakes, upgraded suspension, and unique aero (bi-plane rear wing).
  • The 5.0 split by transmission: 175-hp 4-bbl carbureted (manual) vs new 165-hp CFI throttle-body injection (automatic).
  • The AOD 4-speed automatic overdrive was introduced.
  • A 20th-anniversary GT350 edition (Oxford White with Canyon Red trim; 5,261 built).

Worth knowing

Notable

  • First model year of the SVO — a landmark turbocharged, handling-first Mustang.
  • The 20th-anniversary GT350 (Ford revived the 'GT350' name without Shelby involvement).

Living with it

Reliability & ownership notes

  • The SVO is mechanically sophisticated for its day — turbo, intercooler, and electronics demand a knowledgeable specialist; parts can be hard to source.
  • 1984 CFI 5.0s introduced electronic engine management to the V8 line; the carbureted 5.0 remained the higher-output manual-only option.
  • Standard Fox-body rust inspection applies.
