Ferrari California / Portofino History
History
Launched in 2008, the Ferrari California introduced the retractable hardtop to a Ferrari for the first time. Its front-mid-mounted 4.3-litre naturally aspirated V8 produced 460 hp, and the car was positioned as a more approachable, lifestyle-oriented Ferrari — a deliberate play to attract new customers. It was also the first production Ferrari with direct fuel injection.
The 2014 California T replaced the naturally aspirated V8 with a 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged unit producing 560 hp, previewing the engine that would power the 488 and subsequent mid-engine cars. The Portofino (2017) updated the platform with 591 hp and revised styling; the Portofino M (2020) added the eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox from the Roma.
The Roma, a fixed-roof 2+2 coupé unveiled in 2019 and sharing the Portofino's powertrain at 620 hp, addressed a slightly different customer — those wanting a sleek grand tourer rather than an open-air cruiser. Together the California/Portofino/Roma family has been central to Ferrari's volume growth in the entry segment.
