Ferrari 288 GTO History

The Ferrari 288 GTO debuted at the 1984 Geneva Motor Show as a road-legal homologation special intended for the FIA Group B rally category — a class ultimately cancelled before Ferrari could compete. Its twin-turbocharged 2.855-litre V8 produced 400 hp, making it at launch the world's most powerful production road car.

Only 272 examples were built (1984–1987) — considerably more than the required 200 for homologation, owing to overwhelming customer demand. The 288 GTO's DNA directly influenced the F40 and established the 'special series' flagship-supercar tradition that runs through Ferrari's history to the LaFerrari and SF90 XX.

Three evolution 288 GTO Evoluzione prototypes were built for the Group B programme and are among the rarest and most valuable Ferraris in existence.
