Donkervoort S8 History
History
Introduced in late 1983 when Donkervoort moved to a larger facility in Loosdrecht, the S8 (the 'Eight' a deliberate nod to bettering the Lotus Seven) brought a 2.0-litre Ford engine with up to 110 hp and a five-speed gearbox over the S7's four-speed.
The S8A variant (1985–1993) widened the chassis, added independent rear suspension, fuel injection, and restyled fenders; its 2.0-litre Ford produced 117 hp. The S8AT (1986–1994) added a turbocharger to that engine, lifting output to 170 hp — a dramatic figure for such a light car.
Together the S8 variants brought Donkervoort to wider attention across Europe and established the formula — lightweight aluminium-tube chassis, cycle-wing bodywork, minimal electronics — that underpins the marque to this day.
