Daimler Sovereign History

The Daimler Sovereign began in 1966 as a more luxurious, fluted-grille version of the Jaguar 420, marking the point at which Daimler shifted fully from a separate engineering identity to upmarket-trim badge engineering on Jaguar cars. The distinguishing features were the traditional Daimler grille, badging, and richer interior appointments.

When the Jaguar XJ6 arrived in 1968, the Sovereign name moved onto the Daimler-badged XJ, where it served as the marque's six-cylinder flagship through the Series 1, 2 and 3 cars until 1983 (the V12 version was sold separately as the Daimler Double-Six). The Sovereign name was later borrowed by Jaguar itself for a high-spec XJ6 trim.
