Daewoo Nubira History
History
Launched in 1997 as the middle model between the Lanos and the Leganza, the Nubira (J100) was notable for being developed under the engineering direction of Dr. Ulrich Bez — later CEO of Aston Martin — who brought European discipline to the project's ride, noise, and quality targets. The name means 'to crisscross' in Korean, reflecting Daewoo's global ambitions.
The Nubira was offered in three body styles (four-door sedan, five-door hatchback, and five-door wagon) and reached North America in 2000, sold through 2002 as Daewoo's financial troubles mounted and the company entered bankruptcy. A facelifted Nubira II (J150) arrived for 2000 with over 90 improvements. The Nubira line was succeeded by the Lacetti after GM's acquisition.
