History
Offered alongside the Thirty from the Chalmers-Detroit era, the Forty was the company's bigger, more powerful, and considerably more expensive four-cylinder car, priced in the region of $2,750–$3,000 against the Thirty's roughly $1,500. It gave Chalmers a presence in the upper-middle bracket of the brass-era market.
The Forty was offered in the open coachwork typical of the period, including touring, roadster, and torpedo bodies. As Chalmers shifted toward six-cylinder cars in the mid-1910s, the early big four was phased out.
