History

Introduced in 1994, the Autozam AZ-Wagon was Mazda's rebadged version of the first-generation Suzuki Wagon R, a tall-body kei car that pioneered the format Japan would embrace in the late 1990s. Sold through Autozam dealerships, the AZ-Wagon offered exceptional head room and interior versatility in a kei-legal footprint.

When Autozam's retail stores were reorganised as 'Mazda Autozam' outlets in 1997–1998, the AZ-Wagon nameplate was folded into Mazda's own lineup and continued under the Mazda AZ-Wagon name. The model persisted well into the 2000s, reflecting the enormous commercial success of the Wagon R platform it was built on.
