History

The Amilcar Compound, developed by engineer Jean-Albert Grégoire and presented at the Paris Motor Show in October 1937, was one of the most technically advanced passenger cars of its era. It used a monocoque body shell made from Alpax — an aluminium alloy — giving a rigid, lightweight structure at a time when most cars still used body-on-frame construction. Power came from a 1,185 cc four-cylinder side-valve engine driving the front wheels through an all-synchromesh four-speed gearbox and constant-velocity-jointed half-shafts — front-wheel drive being another rarity in 1937.

The suspension was fully independent all around: twin transverse-leaf springs at the front, and a transverse torsion-bar arrangement at the rear mounted on a bolt-on steel sub-frame. Rack-and-pinion steering completed the modern specification. Production was slow to build because the Alpax monocoque panels were difficult to manufacture in quantity; only 35 cars were completed in the final quarter of 1938. By 1939 the line had found its rhythm — 576 Compounds were built that year — and a more powerful prototype with a 1,340 cc overhead-valve engine was ready for an October 1939 launch.

The German invasion of May–June 1940 ended civilian automobile production in the Paris region before that upgrade could reach customers. Of the 681 B38 passenger cars completed in total, 64 were built in the first months of 1940; the remaining 64 (plus earlier examples) never received their planned engines. Amilcar did not resume production after the Liberation, and the Compound stands as the marque's technical high-water mark — a car that pointed toward the post-war European mainstream it never lived to see.
