History
Launched in 1928, the M-Type represented a deliberate shift for Amilcar away from pure sports cars toward a broader touring market. It used a 1,200 cc four-cylinder side-valve engine — larger and smoother than the CGS unit — in a more practical body suited to everyday use rather than competition.
The M-Type evolved through successive versions: M2 (1929), M3 (1930), and M4 (1931), each refining the formula. It remained available for sale through approximately 1935, though production had likely wound down before then. While it sold adequately, the M-Type never captured the enthusiast following of the Grand Sport era, and the marque struggled as the Depression squeezed the market for small French cars.
