Aiways U6 History
History
Aiways introduced the U6 ion concept at the 2020 Chengdu Auto Show as a sportier, coupe-roofed companion to the U5. The production U6 entered pre-production at the Shangrao plant in May 2021 and reached European markets in early 2022. Its exterior was styled by Ken Okuyama, a Japanese designer previously associated with Ferrari and Pininfarina, giving the U6 a distinctly more premium silhouette than the U5.
Mechanically the U6 shares the U5's MAS platform and its 63 kWh battery paired with a front-mounted 218 hp electric motor (slightly more power than the U5), delivering a claimed WLTP range of approximately 405 km. Notable features included a panoramic domed glass roof carried over from the concept and a remote-parking system operable via smartphone from up to 10 metres away.
Like the U5, the U6's production life was cut short by Aiways' mid-2023 financial crisis. With Chinese domestic operations suspended by 2024, the U6 was left without a clear future, though Aiways' post-restructuring European-pivot plans referenced continued availability of the model in select markets pending resolution of the company's SPAC listing ambitions.
