VAM introduced the Pacer to Mexico for 1976, two years after the US launch, positioning it as a premium vehicle rather than the quirky economy car AMC had marketed in North America. The Mexican Pacer differed substantially from its US counterpart: government content rules mandated at least 60% locally sourced parts, so VAM fitted its own 4.6-liter (282 cu in) inline-six producing approximately 200 hp rather than the AMC sixes used in the US. The V8 option, four-speed manual, and station wagon body were not offered in Mexico.
Despite its innovative wide-body design and upscale positioning, the Pacer underperformed in Mexico. Its premium price and limited trunk space worked against it in a market that preferred traditional notchback sedans. Production wound down quickly: only 619 units were assembled during 1979, the final model year, before VAM discontinued the line.
