History
VAM launched its mid-size offering in 1963 as the Rambler Classic, paralleling AMC's US lineup. Initially offered as a two-door hardtop and four-door sedan, the Classic was positioned above the Rambler American as VAM's intermediate. When AMC replaced the Rambler Classic with the Rebel for 1967, VAM continued the 'Classic' name on what was effectively an AMC Rebel-based car, preserving the familiar nameplate for the Mexican market.
From 1972 onward, VAM's Matador-based sedan was badged as the 'Classic DPL,' while the performance coupe became the 'Classic AMX' and the luxury coupe the 'Classic Brougham.' When the Brougham coupe underperformed, VAM narrowed the Matador-based line to the DPL four-door sedan only from 1973. This sedan continued as VAM's mid-size through 1983, making the Classic name one of the longest-running VAM designations.

Classic DPL era (Matador-based) · 1972–1983
AMC Matador platform; sold as 'Classic DPL' (sedan), 'Classic AMX' (sport coupe), and 'Classic Brougham' (luxury coupe) — coupe variants dropped after 1972 due to low sales; DPL sedan continued through 1983.
