History
The Outback debuted for the 1995 model year as a raised, body-cladded Legacy wagon variant marketed as 'The World's First Sport Utility Wagon.' It offered car-like handling, standard AWD, and enough ground clearance for light off-road use — a combination that resonated strongly in the US market.
So successful was the Outback that Subaru made it an independent model for 1996, giving it unique sheet metal and separating it from the Legacy wagon. A flat-six engine option arrived in the 2000s, and the Outback grew into a near-crossover size to compete with the Honda CR-V class.
The sixth-generation Outback (2020) rode on the Subaru Global Platform with standard EyeSight, and Subaru added the rugged Outback Wilderness trim for 2022 — with 9.5 inches of ground clearance and a 260-hp turbo 2.4-liter — as the high-water mark of the nameplate's off-road ambitions.
