History
The BRZ (Boxer engine, Rear-drive, Zenith) was co-developed by Subaru and Toyota, arriving for the 2013 model year alongside Toyota's 86 (sold in the US as the Scion FR-S, then Toyota 86). Built on a shared platform, the BRZ used Subaru's naturally aspirated 2.0-liter flat-four mated to a rear-wheel-drive layout — an unusual configuration for a brand synonymous with AWD.
Critics praised the BRZ's balance, precision steering, and approachable limits, though its modest 200 hp from the 2.0-liter drew persistent complaints. The first generation ran from 2013 through 2020 (no 2021 model year was produced).
A long-awaited second generation arrived for 2022 with a 228-hp 2.4-liter flat-four, sharper styling, and an improved chassis — widely regarded as addressing the original's main weakness. Both the BRZ and the updated GR86 retained naturally aspirated engines by design, prioritizing driver engagement over peak power.
