The Simca 1000 — Simca Mille in French — debuted at the 1961 Paris Motor Show with production beginning on 27 July of that year. It was a compact, boxy rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive saloon powered by a new water-cooled inline-four 'Poissy engine' of 944 cc, offering modern engineering and low running costs at an accessible price.
In the model's early years, Italian tuner Abarth created potent derivatives. The 1965 Simca-Abarth 1150 S raised output to around 58–60 PS, while the 1966 Simca-Abarth 1150 SS, with dual Solex carburettors and aluminium engine components, reached 65 PS and featured disc brakes at all four corners — remarkable for the class.
From 1970, Simca itself launched the Rallye performance series. The Rallye 1, Rallye 2, and Rallye 3 progressively raised the bar; the swan-song Rallye 3 produced 103 PS and was built in a limited run of just 1,000 cars during the final year of production, 1978 — making it a sought-after collector's piece today.
