Simca Aronde History
History
Launched in 1951, the Aronde ('swallow' in Old French, echoing Simca's swallow logo) was a landmark car: it was Simca's first model not derived from a Fiat and the company's first unibody construction. Powered by a 1,200 cc four-cylinder engine, it offered a modern, integrated body at an accessible price.
Sales were extraordinary: the first generation alone surpassed 100,000 units by March 1953 and totalled over 300,000 before the 1955 facelift. Across three generations — the 9 Aronde (1951–1955), 90A Aronde (1955–1958), and Aronde P60 (1958–1964) — some 1.4 million were built, a figure that made Simca France's second-largest carmaker by the end of the decade.
The Aronde range spanned saloons, coupés, cabriolets, and estates (including the elegant Plein Ciel coupé and Océane cabriolet), demonstrating that a mass-market French maker could build stylish, desirable cars. Its success funded the expansion that allowed Simca to acquire Ford's French operations in 1954.
