Sbarro Stash History

The Stash debuted alongside the BMW 328 Replica at the 1974 Geneva Motor Show and represented Sbarro's first fully original production-intent design. Offered in coupé and targa (cabriolet) body styles, it was aimed at buyers who wanted something genuinely exclusive rather than a replica of an existing car.

Engine options were wide-ranging: a Volkswagen K70 four-cylinder in 1.8-litre naturally aspirated (105 hp) or turbocharged (147 hp) form; a 3.0-litre BMW straight-six; and a 6.9-litre Mercedes-Benz V8 producing 286 hp. A Pierre Cardin special edition was also offered, adding a fashion-house imprimatur to the limited run.

Despite the model range breadth, only five Stash vehicles were ever sold, confirming that Sbarro's commercial appeal lay with its replicas rather than its original designs. The Stash was nonetheless influential internally, establishing the bespoke-commission approach that Franco Sbarro would refine throughout the 1980s.
