Saleen Saleen Mustang History

Saleen's business began in 1984 with a modified Fox-body Ford Mustang — an initial run of three cars — combining suspension, aerodynamic, and wheel/tire upgrades with distinctive body kits, each badged and serial-numbered as a Saleen vehicle. In 1985 Saleen fitted the first certified supercharger to a production Saleen Mustang. Through the Fox-body and SN-95 years these cars were marketed as turn-key performance Mustangs, emphasizing handling and track-bred chassis tuning.

The flagship of the late-1990s line was the S351, which used a Saleen-assembled 351-cubic-inch (5.8-liter) V8 — often equipped with a Vortech supercharger — for up to approximately 495 hp in supercharged R-Code form, well above any factory Ford Mustang of the era. Annual production across the 1994–1999 S351 program was typically in the tens of units, making it a rare collector item today.

As Saleen's model naming formalized, the 'Saleen Mustang' label gave way to the alphanumeric S281 designation tied to engine displacement, but the core formula — a thoroughly re-engineered Mustang sold as a complete Saleen vehicle with its own serial number — carried straight through into the modern era.
